The Bowen Road Primary School project delivered new flexible learning spaces and amenities for Year 5 and 6 students, replacing classrooms lost to a fire in 2022. The design adopts a revised building location and orientation to establish a more effective masterplan outcome, where a single modest structure activates three distinct external zones and enhances overall site connectivity.

There were several interesting engineering components to the design including feature steelwork awnings, curved brick retaining walls, site spatial constraints, feature guttering and downpipes.

Several project obstacles were dealt with during the design phase of the project such as construction time frames and budget constraints through the use of innovative design measures ultimately resulting in the project being delivered 25% under budget.

Key engineering features of the project included:

  • Addressable Fire Detection and Occupancy Warning systems.

  • Building automation complying with NCC Section J requirements.

  • Lighting throughout utilised the latest in LED technology coupled with a daylight harvesting control system.

  • Self-testing, Exit and Emergency lighting installations reducing statutory maintenance time and costs.

  • Wi-Fi infrastructure and networks to enable both Staff and Students wireless internet access

  • Fully networked CCTV system via dedicated Cat 6A cabling.

  • Public access and building facade lighting installations

  • Intruder detection and access control installations

  • Hearing augmentation and extension of sitewide public address system.

  • Inverter A/C systems both individual split and variable refrigerant volume (VRV) type systems.

  • Mechanical Exhaust and Ventilation systems using energy efficient electronically commutated motors.

  • Curved brick and reinforced block retaining walls.

  • Feature steelwork façade and awning systems.

  • Below ground on-site stormwater detention system.

  • Hot cold and tempered water reticulation services.

  • Feature roof drainage system including custom eaves gutters and stainless steel downpipes.

  • DDA access pathways and integration with surrounding landscaping and buildings.
